FLY GUY
From Minnesota’s Long Winter Days To Florida’s Warm, Friendly Rays, Former Air Force Recruit Thomas Konzem Is One Well-Traveled Man
Thomas Konzem was born Gueirmo Ramirez in Bogotá, Colombia, in the summer of 1980. When he was just four months old, he was adopted by what he calls an “educated, loving, disciplined couple from Minnesota.” Thomas became the third and youngest in a clan of adopted children who all grew up in a Midwestern state famous for frigid winters.
The icicles hanging from his earlobes never seemed to bother Thomas much, since he still looks back on his chilly childhood fondly. “It was great!” he exclaims. “I got to go sledding and stuff as a kid. You can’t beat that!” He did eventually flee his flock to make friends with the Florida sun, but not before a stint in the United States Air Force—and more snow—in Germany.
His decision to join the Air Force after high school was all his own because he figured it was time to grow up. “As a teenager I was promiscuous and I was just messing up. It was just time to look at my life and straighten it up.”
Did it work? “Yes, it worked,” Thomas says laughing. “Well, for the most part, it did!”
Thomas realized he was gay when he was about 13 or 14 but didn’t come out to his parents until almost ten years later. “I was forced out,” he says with a hint of exaggerated humor.
The story goes something like this: Thomas had broken up with his then-boyfriend in Germany, who was also in the military. He and an Air Force buddy decided to move back to the States—Florida, to be precise. Once Thomas arrived, he began to think he may have made a mistake by leaving Germany—and his boyfriend—so quickly.
So Thomas decided to move back to Europe. But at the same time, his parents were already planning a visit to his new home in Florida. Thomas had to call his parents and let them know he wouldn’t be in the Sunshine State for their visit. “My parents were like, ‘Why are you going back to Germany? You just left there four months ago,’” he remembers. Thomas says he only paused for a moment before he knew that he was going to have to come clean: “Remember that guy Josh?”
They did. And Thomas remembers his parents asking with a tone that seemed to confirm what he was trying to convey: “So you’re moving back because of a boy?”
That was it. Thomas barely remembers batting an eye before he just blurted it out: “Yeah. I’m gay. And I’m going back for a boy.”
A few moments of telephone silence were followed by his father’s sincere and heartfelt inquiry. “My dad said, ‘Is this what you want? Is this who you are?’ And I said ‘Yes, yes.’ And that was it,” recalls Thomas.
To this day, Thomas still maintains a strong relationship with both his folks. Ultimately, he didn’t “go back for the boy” in Germany. But he’s happy everything worked out like it did, because right now he’s loving his life. Currently the operations manager at Lifestyle Family Fitness in Tampa, Florida, he’s risen through the company’s ranks. He started as a personal trainer and taught group fitness before moving on to sales and eventually landing his current position. He laughs, thinking, “I guess I’ve hit every department in this club!”
He’ll keep his job at the gym while pursuing his other dreams. “I was always told by my parents—and I love my parents—never quit your day job. If I want to pursue acting or modeling, it’s hard, and I’m the type of person that needs to know I have a full-time job to keep me grounded while I go after other stuff.
This Instinct cover, for example—it’s awesome! I’m extremely happy and quite honored, honestly, and I think, Well, wow, what an accomplishment! Where else can this take me?”
To the stars and beyond, Thomas. The stars and beyond.
